## Seepage, Drainage, and Flow Nets

Although it has a fundamental approach, it is not a mathematical treatise on seepage theory and its use does not require proficiency in higher mathematics. Theory and mathematics are included only to the extent needed to promote an understanding of seepage and drainage phenomena.

Emphasis is on practical applications rather than complex theories. Thus Darcy's law and the graphical flow net are given considerable emphasis, for these two fundamental tools offer solutions to countless everyday seepage and drainage problems. When these techniques are used with experience and judgment they can help designers understand the basic nature of seepage and drainage problems and how to develop the best kinds of systems to prevent damage from harmful water actions. In the past, when designers relied on "intuition" and "rules-of-thumb" for decisions about the design of overflow weirs, earth dams, pavements, and other facilities exposed to the detrimental actions of water, failures and inefficiencies were all too common.

With the development of the "rational" and "experimental" methods by leaders such as K. Terzaghi and A. Casagrande, designers began to have a better understanding of the true nature of soil masses and earth foundations and how to design safe, economical engineering facilities.

But, the flow of water in natural formations and in drainage materials intended to control it has somehow remained a mystery to many. This has often led to the selection of inadequate designs and completely "wrong" kinds of drainage materials. A large retaining wall in Portland, Oregon top pled after heavy rains, presumably because the "pervious" backfill behind the wall contained so many fines that it was in reality little more permeable than the soil it was supposed to drain.

And, most of the world's pavements are breaking up prematurely because they are in fact poorly drained. In both of these examples, designers made the same mistake-not thinking of drains as conveyors of water. This book presents simple methods for analyzing the discharge needs of drains for all kinds of civil engineering works needing protection from water, and many illustrations of the practical application of these principles. After nearly five decades of working with earth projects I am fully convinced that seepage analysis and control are among the most important challenges facing civil engineers.

Although many projects are being made possible by drainage or other seepage control, the need still exists for better understanding and broader application of sound drainage principles. Helping to achieve these goals is a primary aim of this book. Part I contains chapters on permeability, seepage fundamentals, and flow net construction.

In presenting basic information about seepage and permeability, an effort has been made to relate fundamentals to commonly observed phenomena. Thus the chapter on permeability compares seepage through soils and porous aggregates with flow through pipes and open channels. Emphasis is also placed on the extremely wide variations in permeability that exist and on the even wider variations in velocities and quantities of seepage through soils and porous media.

These wide variations tend to obscure the true nature of seepage in earth masses. Chapter 4 on flow nets provides instructions and step-by-step examples that should help beginners and advanced students alike to develop skill in flow-net construction.

Chapter 5 on filter and drain design describes basic design concepts and emphasizes the great advantages of composite drains for the control of seepage in many kinds of civil engineering works. Other chapters in Part II present typical seepage analyses and drainage designs for earth dams and levees Chapter 6 , foundation dewatering and stabilization by drainage Chapter 7 , slope improvement by drainage Chapter 8 , drainage of roads, airfields, and other surface facilities Chapter 9 , the improvement of miscellaneous structures by drainage Chapter 10 , and the protection of groundwaters from contamination Chapter This edition contains numerous references to performance records of projects with water problems in many countries, and new ideas on seepage and drainage that have been developed by researchers and others throughout the world see Chapter references.

I have also drawn on my own experiences in the time that has elapsed since the writing of the earlier editions. Practical ways to obtain realistic large-scale evaluations of permeabilities from spreading or receding groundwater mounds are presented in Chapter 2 Sec.

Chapter 6 Sec. Chapter 7 has new information about the synthetic "wick" drains and "fin" drains that are being used in the place of "sand" drains and aggregate drains for numerous purposes. Documented information is given in Chapter 9 proving that the conventional un-drained pavements which fail prematurely from water damage are extremely uneconomical in the long-run when compared with well drained pavements using systems described in this book see "Economics of Drained and Undrained Pavements," Sec.

Because of the mounting contamination dangers to water supplies around the world, a new chapter has been added to this edition Chapter 11 , with substantial new information about this problem, and how to use basic seepage principles to better understand it, and how to try to keep it under control. Simple calculations with Darcy's law explain why serious groundwater contamination in so many areas went on so long without being noticed.

Up-to-date examples of a variety of seepage and drainage problems are given throughout the book, some replacing examples that appeared in the earlier editions.

I thank the many agencies and persons whose published papers, technical reports, and books have furnished material that has assisted in the development of this book. Whenever a source is known, credit has been given. If any omissions have occurred, they are unintentional, and I should appreciate being informed of them.

A flownet is a graphical representation of two- dimensional steady-state groundwater flow through aquifers. Construction of a flownet is often used for solving groundwater flow problems where the geometry makes analytical solutions impractical. The method is often used in civil engineering , hydrogeology or soil mechanics as a first check for problems of flow under hydraulic structures like dams or sheet pile walls. As such, a grid obtained by drawing a series of equipotential lines is called a flownet. The flownet is an important tool in analysing two-dimensional irrotational flow problems.
