2.13: Phase Shift Keying Modulation

The digital modulation like PSK phase shift keying is one kind of modulation which is used to change the phase of the carrier signal to convey the data. In digital modulation, digital data can be represented by using a fixed number of discrete signals.

Phase shift keying utilizes a fixed number of phases, where each phase can be allocated a unique outline of binary digits. Usually, every phase encodes an equivalent digit of bits.

Each outline of bits can form the symbol that is signified through the specific phase. The demodulator is specially designed for the symbol-set which is utilized by the modulator. This article discusses an overview of differential phase-shift keying or DPSK. The phase of the signal tracks the low or high state of the earlier element. The binary bits input series can be changed so that the next bit depends upon the earlier bit.

So, the earlier received bits in the receiver are utilized for detecting the current bit. The above-shown figure is the DPSK waveform. Here, the signal which is transmitted is used as a reference signal.

The DPSK modulator diagram is shown below. This modulation encodes two separate signals namely the carrier signal as well as the modulating signal. In this demodulator, both the previous bit and the reversed bit are compared with each other. The DPSK demodulator block diagram is shown below. From the above block diagram, it is clear that the DPSK signal is applied to a balanced modulator using a 1-bit delay input.

That signal is ready to release in the direction of lower frequencies using a low pass filter. After that, it is transmitted toward a shaper circuit for improving the unique binary data like the output. Here shaper circuit is a Schmitt trigger or comparator circuit. Thus, DPSK is a general type of phase modulation and it is used to transmit data through the carrier wave by changing its phase. This type of PSK removes the need for a consistent reference signal at the end of the receiver by adding two fundamental operations at the end of the transmitter.

Phase-shift keying

There are many variations on phase shift keying PSK modulation with the methods differing by their spectral efficiencies, PMEPR, and suitability for carrier recovery. PSK is an efficient digital modulation scheme and can be simply implemented and demodulated using a phase-locked loop. What is very interesting about this spectrum is that it approximately fills a square. So PSK modulation results in an efficient use of the spectrum. This can be contrasted with the spectrum of an FM signal shown in Figure 2.

Phase-shift keying PSK is a digital modulation process which conveys data by changing modulating the phase of a constant frequency reference signal the carrier wave. The modulation is accomplished by varying the sine and cosine inputs at a precise time. Any digital modulation scheme uses a finite number of distinct signals to represent digital data. PSK uses a finite number of phases, each assigned a unique pattern of binary digits. Usually, each phase encodes an equal number of bits.

The proposed technique is more robust to phase noise and consumes up to On the contrary, the conventional QPSK demodulation process where it uses coherent detection technique requires the exact incoming signal frequency; thus, any variation in the frequency of the local oscillator or incoming signal will cause phase noise. Since some of the power consuming elements such as voltage control oscillator VCO , mixer, and low pass filter LPF are no longer needed, the proposed QPSK demodulator will consume almost Quadrature Phase Shift Keying QPSK is a modulation scheme commonly used in wireless communication system due to its ability to transmit twice the data rate for a given bandwidth [ 1 ]. At the same time, the transmitted QPSK signal frequency, , may also vary by due to Doppler effect [ 3 ].

This technical brief covers the basic characteristics of a digital modulation scheme known as quadrature phase shift keying. In the world of wired electronics, analog signals exhibit continuous variations whereas digital signals assume ideally one of two discrete states. This distinction can be extended to systems that transmit data via electromagnetic radiation instead of electric current traveling through wires. When used for analog signals, frequency modulation and amplitude modulation lead to continuous variations in the frequency or amplitude of a carrier wave. When modulation techniques are used for digital communication, the variations applied to the carrier are restricted according to the discrete information being transmitted.

A digital signal, representing the binary digits 0 and 1 by a series of on and off amplitudes, is impressed onto an analog carrier wave of constant amplitude and frequency. In amplitude-shift keying ASK , the modulated wave represents the series of bits by shifting abruptly between high and low amplitude. In frequency-shift keying FSK , the bit stream is represented by shifts between two frequencies.

In digital modulation techniques, a set of basis functions are chosen for a particular modulation scheme.
