While noted improvements have taken place in the area of ceramics and metals, it is the field of polymers that has experienced an explosion in progress. Polymers have gone from being cheap substitutes for natural products to providing high-quality options for a wide variety of applications. Further advances and breakthroughs supporting the economy can be expected in the coming years.
Aluminum Al , also spelled aluminium , chemical element , a lightweight silvery white metal of main Group 13 IIIa, or boron group of the periodic table. Because of its chemical activity, aluminum never occurs in the metallic form in nature, but its compounds are present to a greater or lesser extent in almost all rocks , vegetation, and animals. Aluminum occurs in igneous rocks chiefly as aluminosilicates in feldspars , feldspathoids , and micas ; in the soil derived from them as clay; and upon further weathering as bauxite and iron-rich laterite. Bauxite, a mixture of hydrated aluminum oxides, is the principal aluminum ore. Crystalline aluminum oxide emery , corundum , which occurs in a few igneous rocks, is mined as a natural abrasive or in its finer varieties as rubies and sapphires. Aluminum is present in other gemstones , such as topaz , garnet , and chrysoberyl.

Processing, properties and applications of aluminum nitride ceramics. ISSN Aluminum nitride AlN is expected to be suitable as substrates and packages for microelectronic devices because of its high thermal conductivity, excellent electrical properties, and thermal expansion coefficient close to that of silicon. These properties make AlN an excellent candidate to replace alumina Al2O3 and beryllia BeO used for the manufacture of semiconductor devices. This paper shows the state-of-the-art in AlN ceramics, aiming to show the advances in processing developed in the last decades for the applications in electronic devices.
