Tragedy struck Edgar Allan Poe very early in life his father abandoned the family when he was just one year old and his mother died of consumption a year later. Although they never formally adopted him, the Allans did give him the name Edgar Allan Poe. Poe attended school in England from until In he went to the recently-opened University of Virginia. In , he started work as an editor for the Southern Literary Messenger.
