A definition of educational technology research is followed by a discussion on how basic research in this field fails to render progress in academic achievement and the potential of qualitative inquiry to promote learning and teaching. Different ontological and epistemological assumptions behind such two research methodologies are also summarized and discussed. The paper then identifies three qualitative research methods that are prevalent in the field of educational technology: ethnography, case study and design-based research.

Educational research

Educational research refers to the systematic collection and analysis of data related to the field of education. Research may involve a variety of methods [1] [2] [3] and various aspects of education including student learning, teaching methods , teacher training, and classroom dynamics. Educational researchers generally agree that research should be rigorous and systematic. Gary Anderson outlined ten aspects of educational research: [2]. There are different approaches to educational research. One is a basic approach, [1] also referred to as an academic research approach. Basic, or academic research focuses on the search for truth [2] or the development of educational theory.

Descriptive research does not fit neatly into the definition of either quantitative or qualitative research methodologies, but instead it can utilize elements of both, often within the same study. The term descriptive research refers to the type of research question, design, and data analysis that will be applied to a given topic. Descriptive statistics tell what is, while inferential statistics try to determine cause and effect. The type of question asked by the researcher will ultimately determine the type of approach necessary to complete an accurate assessment of the topic at hand. Descriptive studies, primarily concerned with finding out "what is," might be applied to investigate the following questions: Do teachers hold favorable attitudes toward using computers in schools? What kinds of activities that involve technology occur in sixth-grade classrooms and how frequently do they occur?

In general, the introduction of tablet devices entails a shift in the way students learn, as the devices provide interactive, media-rich, and exciting new environments.

The success of education with technology research is in part because the field draws upon theories and methods from multiple disciplines. However, drawing upon multiple disciplines has drawbacks because sometimes the methodological expertise of each discipline is not applied when researchers conduct studies outside of their research training. The focus here is on research using methods drawn largely from psychology, for example, evaluating the impact of different systems on how students perform. The methodological concerns discussed are: low power; not using multilevel modeling; dichotomization; and inaccurate reporting of the numeric statistics. Examples are drawn from a recent set of proceedings.
